Freestyle Artist Magazine is an artist publication by BriAnna Rosen, first published in 2016. The magazine explores socio-political issues, questions place + agency, and investigates the causes and effects of gentrification in Portland, OR and beyond.
The second or yellow issue of Freestyle was distributed inside drop boxes for free publications along TriMet stops in the Pearl District. The aesthetics of the magazine morphed to replicate artist publications of the 1960s including Vito Acconci and Bernadette Mayerʼs 0 to 9 and The Situationist Times edited by Jacqueline de Jong. This issued also marked the inclusion of Martha Rosler inspired documentary photography.
Freestyle art is not only about producing new creations but is also defined as empowering the artist from hegemonic patterns.
